THE MARKET HOUSE
''Piltown Market House was handsome building erected at the expense of the Earl of Besborough in1828 and was used as a school and for public meetings. At its rear was a commodious quay, at which not less than 126 vessels discharged their cargoes in one year, the Suir being and navigable for vessels of 200 tons' burden as far as the Pill, and for smaller vessels up to the town''.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1923 and rebuilt as a Garda Barracks in 1926.
